As a college reading professor at Mesa Community College, I spent years working with students who arrived on campus with reading scores below 68% on their reading placement exams — capable students who had simply never been shown how to handle college-level reading. By the time they finished my Reading Development Class, that same group was averaging 87% on assignments and 89% on assessments, and only 1% dropped out during their first two years of college.

What I saw over and over wasn't a student problem. It was a preparation gap. Most students are fully capable of succeeding in college, but they were never taught the specific reading strategies and study habits that make dense college material manageable.
