As a college professor in the reading department, I have seen how many students begin college feeling unprepared for the level of reading they are asked to do. Many students are capable of succeeding, but they have never been taught the strategies to read college-level texts with confidence. That is why I created HelpULearn — and why I now offer 1-on-1 coaching to students who want personalized support.
I hold a doctorate in Education. I am a certified reading specialist. I have developed reading and writing curricula for college readiness, developmental reading, and GED programs. And I work with students one at a time because that is where the biggest changes happen.
Please reach us at Swest@helpulearn.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.
We meet on Zoom, one-on-one, for 50 minutes. You'll see me, I'll see you, and we'll share documents on screen so we can read and write together in real time. All you need is a computer or tablet with a camera, a quiet space, and a reliable internet connection. I send a calendar invite with the meeting link after you book.
The Discovery Call is a 20-minute conversation. We talk about your goals, your timeline, and whether 1-on-1 coaching is the right fit. No diagnostic, no homework, no pressure.
The Reading Snapshot is a full 50-minute paid first session. You take a short reading and writing diagnostic, we review it together in real time, and you leave with a clear picture of where to focus and which package (if any) makes sense next.
Start with the Discovery Call if you're still deciding. Book the Snapshot if you're ready to find out exactly where you stand.
The College Fast Track and GED Reading and Language Pathways courses are self-paced. You work through modules of video lessons, practice, and quizzes on your own schedule. They are structured, affordable, and covers everything you need to build college-level reading skills and/or to pass the GED Reading Test.
1-on-1 coaching is what happens when you want someone working alongside you — adjusting the plan to your specific weaknesses, answering questions in the moment, giving feedback on your actual writing, and holding you accountable to the work. Every coaching package includes the course at no extra cost. You get both.
The GED Reading & Writing Track was built for you. We meet you where you are — no judgment, no assumptions about why you're working toward your GED — and build the reading and writing skills the test actually measures, using my GED Reading & Language Pathways materials throughout. It is not a watered-down version of the college program. It's a separate path, built around what GED success requires.
Yes — and I treat them as connected, not separate. Strong writers are almost always strong readers, and the skills feed each other. Every package includes written-feedback support, and several include a full paper or essay review. If your bigger need is writing, tell me on the Discovery Call and we'll build the plan around that.
If your student is a junior or senior preparing for college, yes. The College Readiness Plan is built for them — we focus on the reading and writing skills they'll need their first semester, including placement test preparation. For younger students (9th–10th grade), start with the Discovery Call. We'll talk through whether 1-on-1 coaching makes sense yet, or whether the self-paced course is enough for now.
Most students notice a shift in how they approach reading within the first 2–3 sessions. Measurable skill change — better inference accuracy, stronger writing structure, faster comprehension on dense texts — typically shows up by week 4 to 6. That's why every package includes a written progress summary. You shouldn't have to guess whether it's working.
Yes. Every package over $250 can be split into 2 monthly payments, shown directly on each pricing card. Billing runs through ThriveCart — your card is charged automatically on the same day each month, and you'll get a receipt every time.
This isn't right for students looking for homework help on a specific assignment due tomorrow — for that, the $75 Single Session works better than a package. It's also not designed for elementary readers, students with severe reading disabilities requiring specialized clinical intervention, or anyone who isn't willing to do work between sessions. Coaching only works when both sides show up. If you're not sure whether you fit, book the Discovery Call. I will tell you honestly.
If you complete two sessions and feel the coaching isn't right for you, I will refund the remaining balance on your package, no questions asked. After that point, packages are non-refundable, but unused sessions can be transferred to another family member or paused for up to 90 days if life gets in the way.
For the full rescheduling and cancellation policy, see the Terms and Conditions page.
Two reasons. First, I work directly with students — no tutoring agency, no marketplace, no middleman taking a cut. That keeps the price down without changing the quality of what you get. Second, I believe families and adult learners working toward college or the GED shouldn't have to pay $150 an hour for the reading help they need. My credentials don't change with the price. My mission does.
